Other Characters Played: Shiki Ryougi, Arthas Menethil
Character Name: Aya Shameimaru
Canon: Touhou Project
Canon Background: http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Aya_Shameimaru
AU Background:
Aya is that rarest of beasts, a middle-class fey - too influential to be a peasant, but lacking the birth to be nobility. Her success in the fey world was mostly brought about through her own work, and while her reporting was popular among the common fey, she managed to draw the wrath of nearly every faerie court at one time or another. As a result of this wave of rage, and based on the theory that rumors between fey only last for 75 years, Aya is taking a sabbatical from reporting on faerie politics to cover the world of humans instead, which it turns out is every bit as interesting.
Personality:
Aya is very much a sum of her parts: A fey, and a reporter. She is cheerful, enthusiastic, nosy, and more than a little mischevious. She loves her job, and would do it even if she didn't get paid for it (which is good, because sometimes she doesn't). She loves to stick her nose in other people's business, which can make her a little unpopular with certain people, and very popular with others, especially those who like to talk about themselves.
When pursuing a story, there is little that Aya won't do. Normally, her natural charisma is enough to draw a lead out of someone, but if that won't work, she's perfectly capable of using stealth or trickery to get what she wants. If that doesn't work, she's not above stooping to physical violence, especially if somebody gets in her way. Besides, it's natural for fey to attack humans, although smart ones like Aya don't do it unless they have to.
In conversation, Aya is very friendly and upbeat, most of the time. She's capable of changing her disposition on the fly based on who she's talking to, usually becoming much more formal and polite if she's bothering someone for a lead or an interview. However, sometimes she'll get a bit excited or carried away and her facade will start to gradually drop, and she'll slide back into being straightforward and blunt.
In writing, "accuracy" is not among Aya's particularly valued virtues. She will often deliberately bend or sensationalize the facts, putting elaborate spins on the actual information she got in order to make a story more exciting than it really is. In extreme cases, she'll go out of her way to create news, causing trouble one moment and reporting on it the next.
Aya thinks very highly of herself. While she is rather strong and smart, her perception of the Bunbunmaru News is somewhat higher than that of the general public. This is a point of contention that will often sidetrack her in interviews, as she angrily defends her newspaper against criticism from the people she's interviewing for it.
Aya doesn't like fighting. Well, okay, she doesn't claim to like it, but circumstantial evidence suggests that she actually does. She picks fights a lot, especially while she's on the job. In Phantasmagoria of Flower View, she lampshades this, reflecting on the fact that her various battles hadn't actually accomplished anything in getting her scoop, and wondering if she was developing a dueling addiction. While she starts a lot of fights, however, she seldom takes them seriously and seldom ends them properly, pretending to lose on accident or leaving before the conclusion.
Combat Style:
As a fey, Aya has a number of supernatural abilities, all around the themes of speed and flight. She can fly freely and move at incredible speed, and isn't exactly physically weak, either. In close combat she mostly uses martial arts with a lot of kicks in them, relying less on skill and finesse and more on speed and power. In addition to flight, she can manipulate wind, calling forth both blades of compressed air and small localized whirlwinds, in addition to simply altering the wind speed and direction in the immediate area.
The closest thing Aya has to a weapon is her camera. While one might argue that knowledge is the true form of power, it also does have actual physical power, in the form of neutralizing magical energy within the picture's scope when taking a photograph. This can be used for such things as snapping holes in barriers or erasing magical attacks, although the power of this is limited and it takes some time to reload the film after each shot.
